NSW Man Who Implanted Opal Card Into His Hand Fined for Not Producing Valid (Physical) Ticket

Bio-implants might be the future, but there are still laws to follow.

A man who inserted an NSW Opal Card chip into his hand has been fined for not producing a valid ticket while on public transport.

According to the ABC, the man, Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow, inserted the Opal Card chip so that he could tap-on and off with just his hand; something he would definitely never accidentally leave at home (a miracle).

But 'twas not to be.

Meow-Meow was fined $220 for breaching the card's terms of use; specifically, the part where it says: "You must immediately produce the Opal Card or Device that you are using if requested to do so by an Authorised Officer."

He decided to take the fine to court as Sydney's ferries and light rail had recently introduced contactless payments that don't require an Opal Card. While the Magistrate agreed that the law was lagging behind in this area, he ordered Meow-Meow to pay the fine plus the legal costs ($1,000) as it is still the law.

Meow-Meow has said he will continue using bio-technology implants.
