Listen To Missy Higgins' Devastating Song About Alan Kurdi And Asylum Seekers

Missy Higgins has lent her very soothing voice to the ongoing refugee debate in Australia (and the world), releasing a new song inspired by the death of Syrian three-year-old Alan Kurdi.
Titled “Oh Canada,” it features Higgins singing from the perspective of Alan Kurdi’s father, Abdullad. Abdullad was the only surviving asylum seeker of the Kurdi family. They were attempting to reach Canada before disaster struck. In a statement, Higgins explained her motivation for writing the song. “From where I sat in my comfortable living room nursing my newborn son, the tiny child in that wrenching image could have been my own little boy,” she said. The image of Alan Kurdi, washed up on the beach after having drowned in the Mediterranean Sea, has become the defining image of the current refugee crisis. “I felt overwhelmed by a profound protective instinct for him and people like him,” she added. The music video, directed by Natasha Pincus and Nicholas Kallincos, is built around images drawn by refugee children, supported by Caritas and World Vision. The Asylum Seekers Resource Centre (ASRC) will receive 100 per cent of all net proceeds from the song’s sales. Meanwhile in Melbourne, Hannah Patchett and Katherine Woskett of the Whistleblowers Activist Citizens Alliance (WACA) have scaled the 162m-high spire of Arts Centre Melbourne to release a banner stating #LetThemStay. Their protest is in solidarity with the movement to keep 267 asylum seekers from being returned to the Nauru Detention Centre. As of this writing, police are in negotiations to return the women to the ground.More news as it develops.
