Listen To 15-Year-Old Singing Sensation Mi'Kaisha Masella Kick-Off NAIDOC Week

What were you doing at age nine? Probably nothing quite as consequential as Mi'Kaisha Masella.

Mi'Kaisha told ABC Radio this morning it was at age nine she began to take music “seriously”, and she wasn’t lying. Within a couple years of her declaration, she’d nabbed a credit on The Sapphires soundtrack and even found herself on The Voice Kids. Most nine-year-olds have to make do with merit certificates.

Now 15, Mi'Kaisha is opening NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week celebrations at Sydney’s Hyde Park this afternoon. But first, she swung by 702 ABC Sydney to share the original song "Anywhere", which details her experience belonging to “two disadvantaged cultures”. (Her mother is a Dharaumbal Murri woman from Central Queensland; her dad is Tongan.)

"I'm really privileged to have such strong cultures and I also have a lot of pride in my heritage as well," she said.

"[NAIDOC Week] is a celebration of both my Indigenous and my Islander heritage. So it's an amazing opportunity to share my talent."
