Oop—Kmart Has Introduced In-Store Afterpay and There Go My Savings

Spending has never felt this easy.

Budgeting is hard, especially when Kmart sells the most irresistible yet unnecessary things, like ‘massage belts’ and Baby Yoda Bath Mats. Honestly, I could get lost in the Homewares section forever.

Well, the store has just made it easier to manage your money…and to spend it? Lemme explain.

What is Afterpay?

Afterpay is a ‘buy now, pay later’ app, which we’ve explained before and weighed up the pros and cons.

In short, it gives you the choice to pay off purchases over time in weekly, fortnightly, or monthly repayments, interest-free (if you make the payment on time!)

Let’s say you wanna get this LED Beanie. Ngl, it’s a questionable choice, but you do you.

Technically, you could pay $5 this week, get your sick new beanie, wash the dishes for mum and pay $5 the week after.

Now imagine that, for big purchases. $100. $500. Ah, the possibility. Makes you wanna spend more, right?

So, what’s new?

For the past three years, Kmart has only offered Afterpay on online orders of $70-$2000. It is now available on all orders, in-store, nation-wide. Oh, and there’s no minimum spend.

Kmart general manager of stores Chris Renshaw told 7 News that the launch is “just in time for Christmas”, allowing customers to have “even more access to our products with the added benefit of managing their budgets”.

Is this a good thing?

There are mixed responses, tbh. Taking a scroll through some of the Facebook comments on Kmart’s post is a wild ride.

One user commented “am trying to restrain myself”, while another simply wrote “yeah, I’m not going to do that.”

Another user really spoke facts when she wrote “debt collectors be like:”

Let’s hope it doesn’t get to that point. We'll all be severely disappointed in humanity if we go into debt over some Star Wars duvet sheets.
