Julie Bishop Voices Support For Marriage Equality On "The Project"

The freight train of marriage equality was just given a nice boost (just like in the conclusion to Back to the Future Part III) by Julie Bishop.
The Foreign Minister went on The Project last night and voiced her support of a plebiscite on same-sex marriage. It follows months of merely hinted support for the cause.
"I think the Australian people should have their say. I have absolutely no concerns about it myself, but I know there a lot of people who are deeply concerned about the issue," she said.
"That's why I think a plebiscite, where the Australian people get to have a vote on it, on an issue as fundamental as this, that goes to the very composition of our community; the way we feel about each other, how we treat each other, that's the core of a plebiscite."
Last week, Kelly O’Dwyer confirmed that the plebiscite would come “shortly” after the next federal election.
"It would be absolutely bizarre for the Parliament to ignore the will of the people,” she added, suggesting that a “yes” vote in favour of same-sex marriage would indeed result in a change to the Marriage Act.
Undeniably, the Government is bracing its more conservative supporters for the eventual reality of same-sex marriage in Australia.
Though many critics have noted that a plebiscite isn’t necessary for the legalisation of gay marriage – and is, in fact, a costly procedure – it is heartening to know that we are inching ever closer to marriage equality in Oz.
