We Spoke to Sam Phillips and Jessica Madsen About all Things “Bridgerton”

“We’re going to bring back [redacted] for Jess Madsen…it’s an exclusive"

WARNING: The following contains spoilers Bridgerton Season 3.

He’s the quiet plant-lover we grew to love, and she’s the sassy lady we love to hate.

But Sam Phillips and Jessica Madsen think if Lord Debling and Cressida Cowper did end up married on Bridgerton season three, their characters would be having a great time!

Jessica who plays Cressida said (while laughing) their marriage would’ve been “peaceful because he wouldn’t have been around.”

“It probably would’ve been really good for Cressida because Debling would have been travelling the whole time and coming back in, what, three years time?” Sam, who plays Lord Debling, said.

“She would’ve had an entire estate all to herself.”

Sam and Jessica had a chat with us ahead of their appearance at Melbourne’s Metro Comic Con and told us what songs they want to hear ‘Bridgerton-fied’, a historical character they would want to play, and their advice for students.

Songs we want to hear on the next Bridgerton soundtrack.

It seems gentle reader, that Jessica was waiting for this question to be asked as she had an answer straight away.

“I really want a Whitney Houston song,” she told Student Edge.

“Which one would you go for?” Sam asked her.

“I Want to Dance with Somebody or I Will Always Love You,” she replied.

Sam also wanted to hear something a bit more nostalgic on a Bridgerton soundtrack.

“I always wanted like Rick Astley, Never Gonna Give You Up…but that’s probably just showing my age.”

And when they found out this author loved a bit of ABBA they were thrilled, and when they found out Student Edge members liked ABBA, they were elated.

We told them that in a recent survey conducted by Youth Insight, 43 per cent of members said they listened to songs by ABBA.

“Good, and so they should be!” Jessica said in response.

“I was gonna say that’s an education in good music right there.”

“I think I’d quite like to play Queen Elizabeth II,” Jessica said.

“I just want to have the pale face and wear those big dresses.”

“We’re going to bring back The Crown season seven for Jess Madsen…it’s an exclusive,” Sam said in response.

He, on the other hand, still had Lord Debling on his mind and went for a traveller theme.

“I’d say like Christopher Columbus…I would like to be an explorer and get to kind of explore new worlds, that would be fun,” he said.

What's their advice for students/Gen Z?

Both Sam and Jessica had poignant pieces of advice for students. But the biggest one: keeping yourself open.

“When I was at drama school, I kind of wish I’d told myself when I was studying to have a life outside of acting,” he said.

“Don’t make it your whole life and then [not] value other things.

“So I think I’d go back and say to myself also enjoy all the other stuff - not just the job, because that makes up life as well.”

Jessica wanted Student Edge members to know “you don’t have to have all the answers.”

“Especially in today’s world it’s so fluid with what we do, from any line of work.

“And I think keep your mind open and yourself open to different opportunities and just be ready for the journey of life.”
