IWD 2019: Here Are Some Awesome Young Women to Be Inspired By

We've spoken to some truly inspiring women over the years at Student Edge. Here are just a few.

It's International Women's Day! This isn't just a celebration of great women, but a reflection on the journey women have taken, and a look towards the journey ahead.

While the achievements of some trailblazing women have permeated our lives and altered world history for the better, we've spoken to many young women whose acheivements are important in their own respect.

Here are some of the women we've spoken to over the years that have truly inspired us.

AFLW Fremantle Dockers, sportswomen.

We spoke to AFLW Fremantle Dockers ahead of their 2018 season, to see how they were shaping up after a season marred by injury and few victories.

Why they're inspiring: Long have women in professional ball sports been overlooked and underpaid, but the rise in AFLW has shown Australia they're something to look out for.

Gordi, musician.

Ahead of her debut release, we spoke to Gordi about her love of bánh mì, why her album sounds so Nordic and that time that Missy Higgins inspired her to make music.

Why she's inspiring: She managed to release her debut full-length album, which got featured on Triple J, all while studying medicine full-time and interning as a doctor. That's mind-blowing.

Newman College's 2017 Year 12 cohort, students.

Most muck up day stories hit the news because they're full of dangerous, hurtful and sometimes illegal acts, but this was a story that went against all the stereotypes. Instead of wrecking their school, the 2017 Newman College Year 12 girls cohort decided to write messages of affirmation all over the bathrooms for their younger peers.

Why they're inspiring: It was the wholesome muck up day story we needed but didn't deserve. These girls bucked the trend of troublesome stories to offer something pretty selfless and for that, we salute them.

Jasmine, Ally and Annabelle, online gamers.

In the aftermath of #GamerGate, we wanted to ask some of the women in Australia's online gaming community what it's like for them. We spoke to a semi-professional online gamer, a streamer and a competitive team manager, and they certainly had stories to tell.

Why they're inspiring: Forging their way in a space that is dominated by males is hard for anyone, but these gamers rise about the toxicity of some of their male counterparts and thrive.

Alice Ivy, musician/producer.

Ahead of her performance at TEDxYouth in Sydney, Alice told us how some of her songs are like going down the rabbit hole, musically.

Why she's inspiring: Being a female musician and music producer in the music industry isn't an easy walk in the park, but Alice is showing Australia that's not going to stop her.

Dominique Jackson, actor.

While playing the fierce and unapologetic Elektra Abundance on FX's Pose, Dominique Jackson had to draw on her experiences. She told us how the trans community still faces immense prejudices in regards to receiving roles for acting but she's hopeful about the future.

Why she's inspiring: Having to live her authentic self hasn't been without its trials but Jackson maintains an unwavering strength that few can match.
