Is "The Simpsons" Still Good?

Is The Simpsons still good? That’s the question we put to our members. Linda Tran said – and we’re paraphrasing - “Simpsons gone bad? That’s unpossible.”

I have a confession.

As a 21-year-old pharmacist, I have been watching The Simpsons religiously since the age of seven, and am proud to say it has shaped me into the person I am today: a respectable individual with ethical views on what is right and wrong who contributes to society and has a good sense of humour (or so I’d like to think).

The reason I describe my viewings of The Simpsons as ‘religious’ is because it really is my religion. I know the names and roles of each and every character in Springfield off by heart and through my daily 30 minute viewings from my childhood, I have learnt so much about ethics and morals, love and hate, crime and punishment, dishonesty, family, greed, and invaluable life lessons every time I watched an episode unfold in front of me.

Now, to be questioned about whether or not my religion is ‘still good’ I find to be rather insulting. The Simpsons have taught me so much about life - more than I could ever ask for - through the daily actions of Springfield’s resident four-fingered folk that I could watch in the comfort of my own home.

It was something I always looked forward to everyday after school and I found it enjoyable and very entertaining. It gave me something to talk to my friends about at school. We had our inside jokes that only those who watched The Simpsons could understand and I felt that those who didn’t watch it were missing out.

Perhaps it could be the way the internet has shaped the mindsets of today’s youths that they expect more from a good quality sit-com. Because my definition of ‘good’ is whatever satisfies my thirst for something that is not only entertaining, makes me laugh and leaves me feeling great about myself at the end of the day.

The perks that you are also learning about life values, morals and ethics while you’re at it is an added bonus. The Simpsons is something that definitely ticks all the boxes for me and always will.

I stand by my word. The Simpsons is still good and always will be.
