Interview: Ewen Leslie from The Daughter

Interview: Ewen Leslie from The Daughter

Get this in your ears.

You've seen him give supporting strength to Aussie films The Mule and Sleeping Beauty, but now, in the all-star Australian production The Daughter, Ewen Leslie is ready for his close up.

In The Daughter - reviewed here - Leslie plays Oliver, a contented family man whose world is turned upside down by the return of an old friend with a devastating, long-held secret.

Student Edge caught up with Ewen ahead of the release of The Daughter to discuss how he originated the role on stage (for director Simon Stone's adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's The Wild Duck) as well as how it felt to go back to "square one" for the film adaptation, also starring Geoffrey Rush, Paul Schneider, Miranda Otto, Sam Neill and newcomer Odessa Young as Oliver's daughter, Hedvig.

We also talked about the differences between getting emotional on stage, for an audience, and getting emotional on a film set, in front of the crew: "You kind of just have to throw all ego out the window and accept the fact that you're going to look pretty stupid in front of a whole bunch of people."

The Daughter arrives in cinema March 17.
