How to Manage Your Money If You Wanna Travel 'Round Australia

Crystal clear oceans, sandy beaches, buzzing cities and never-ending sunshine–you gotta admit, life is pretty awesome Down Under.
And if you’re an international student in Aus, you’ve probs already realised there is a lot to see in this great big country.
Whether you’re here for a semester, a year, or your whole degree, you’re going to want to make the most of your time in Australia with a few cheeky trips.
But we all know travelling can be expensive and with so much to explore, how can you make your money stretch far enough to be able to do it all?
Well, leave any potential FOMO at the airport gate, because we’ve got all the tips you need to manage your money on your Aussie holiday so you can live the good life for a little bit longer.

Hit up hostels.
This isn’t specific to Australia, but it’s particularly helpful because accommodation can be pricey!
Sure, you’ll compromise on a little luxury but for the cash you’ll save, it’ll be totally worth it. Plus, hostels are a great way to meet new friends to explore with.
Or, if you’re looking for something even cheaper and a little adventurous, you could look into camping. There are plenty of campsites around to immerse yourself in the great outdoors and sleep under the stars (or perhaps in a well-equipped cabin if that’s more your thing).

Soak up the beautiful landscapes on offer.
Speaking of nature, there are endless opportunities to enjoy Australia’s natural beauty and most of the time, it’s FREE!
From the Botanical Gardens in Melbourne, to hiking in Sydney’s Blue Mountains, to every beach along our glorious coastline, you won’t have to spend a cent to see many of our best attractions.
There are so many beautiful urban and national parks that are also free to enter, and you never know what kind of Aussie wildlife you might get up close and personal with while you’re there (from a safe distance of course).
Make your own food.
It’s time to get acquainted with the supermarket, friends - buying from the grocery store and prepping your own meals will save you a tonne of money.
If you’re staying in a hostel, they’ll usually have kitchen facilities you can use to cook your own food, or you can head down to one of many parks or beaches with a free public BBQ.
What better way to soak up the local lifestyle than by buying some meat and veggies and grilling it up outdoors?

All aboard the Greyhound bus.
If you really wanna save money when it comes to transport around Australia, you’ll need to get familiar with the Greyhound Bus.
It’s one of the cheapest ways to travel and see all the incredible scenery on offer, especially on the east coast. You can get individual rides for as little as $1 on special, or buy a Whimit pass to hop on and off as much as you like.

Some of the best events and festivals are often free, like Vivid Sydney’s light show or Canberra’s giant celebration of flowers, Floriade. It’s defs worth doing some research into what you might be able to check out while you’re travelling.
If you’re an art lover or don’t mind a good museum, you can wander through most of Australia’s major exhibitions and galleries for free.
And lastly, don’t miss the free walking tours in the big cities! These are usually run daily by local guides who can give you the rundown on the area’s best sights and local history, and then you'd pay what you'd like for their time.
