How to Have Fun These School Holidays (For Free)

Warning: It might involve a little bit of learning too.
Just because you’re low on cash doesn’t mean your holidays have to be low on fun.
The internet is an endless supply of how-to videos, and even though you might be on school holidays, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun learning some non-academic skills.
This school holidays, here’s a list of some cool things you can learn online for free.
1. Sign language basics.
Not only will you be able to make new friends with your sign language skills, you could also use it to sneakily communicate with others who know it. If you decide to continue to study sign language and work towards becoming fluent, you also have the option of becoming a qualified interpreter.
2. Calligraphy
Calligraphy never used to be so trendy, but now, the resurgence of typography has made it cool again. Once you master this, you can start making your own cards and posters (and maybe your own side business on Etsy). Think of all the Instagram likes!
3. Hair braiding
We all know braids look cool, but unfortunately mum won’t always be around to help you. Watch some tutorials and challenge yourself to braid your hair every day; then, you will see your skills advance fast.
4. Knitting
Knitting used to be for your grandma. Not anymore! Hand crafting stuff is fantastic, because it helps you become less reliant on factory-made clothing. If you have some knitting supplies hidden deep in your ‘craft closet’, it’s time to get them out and start making scarves for everyone you know. (Bonus: Sitting down and making something with your hands is also great for your mental health.)
5. Macramé
Like everything else that was popular in the 1970s, macramé is also enjoying a huge resurgence. Make some of your own funky wall hangings/plant hangers/jewellery/tablecloths with this knot-tying technique and soon everyone will want you to make them something.
6, Solving a Rubik’s cube
I am always hugely impressed by anyone who can solve a Rubik’s cube quickly. Seriously. I think this kind of thing could even go on your resume under ‘skills’.
7. Yoga/Meditation
If your school workload has been stressing you out, learning some basic skills in yoga and meditation won’t go astray. Stress less and become the master of chill! Start a meditation group at your school and help your classmates gain some useful relaxation techniques.
These are just a few suggestions to get you started. Plus, if you’re business savvy enough, I’m sure you could even use a skill you’ve learnt off the internet to make some money. Enjoy!
