'Heartbreak High' Review: The Reboot Brings Something New For Everyone

The wait is over.

It’s been 23 years since the classic teen drama Heartbreak High hit our screens, but Netflix has revived the series in a fresh and exciting way.

The original series, based on the OG film The Heartbreak Kid, focused on the students at Hartley High School as they navigated friendship, drama, and love from 1994 until 1999.

Netflix has thoroughly updated the series, bringing Hartley High into the 21st century with a brand-new cast of diverse and well-thought-out characters.

The series has already attracted huuuge attention online, and it looks to be one of Netflix’s new hits.

The new series stars The Moth Effect’s Ayesha Madon as Amerie, an altogether clumsy but charming Year 11 student, who, after a shocking revelation on the first day of term, becomes an outcast at Hartley and must reclaim her reputation.

But Ayesha’s Amerie isn’t the only shining light – the series features a range of characters who reflect modern teens and their struggles.

The Heights’ Asher Yasbincek plays Amerie’s (former) best friend Harper, who starts the show suffering from an unspoken trauma that forms an ongoing mystery at Hartley.

There’s Darren, played by James Majoos, the savage queer kid hiding a heart of gold, and his best mate, Chloe Hayden’s Quinni.

Hayden’s Quinni shines in her role, bringing one of the best representations of a neurodivergent character we’ve ever seen.

A couple weeks ago, Student Edge got the chance to catch up with Will McDonald and Thomas Weatherall, who played Ca$h, the eshay with a heart of gold, and Malakai, the outsider who becomes a heartthrob.

If you liked Sex Education, then this show is absolutely for you.

It has the tendency to play up the drama at times – but that’s exactly what High School can be like – intense, crazy and at times so so funny.

We love this show, and we reckon you will too.

  • This seems quite interesting a bit on the light side but that's what I just need now. Surely watch it.
