Has Alexa Become Self-Aware? Amazon Admits They Know What's Going On With Her "Laughter"

People have joked that Alexa has become "self-aware" but Amazon thinks it's just a simple issue.

Amazon has revealed they are working on a fix for their intelligent personal assistant, Alexa, after reports from customers complaining that she had been acting out lately by laughing at them unprompted.

A spokesperson for Amazon told Metro.co.uk that sometimes Alexa misheard voice commands.

"In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh'," the spokesperson said.

"We are changing that phrase to be 'Alexa, can you laugh?' which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance 'Alexa, laugh'.

"We are also changing Alexa's response from simply laughter to 'sure, I can laugh' followed by laughter."

But Amazon's answer didn't quite address the reports that Alexa's laughter occurred entirely unprompted.

Or the customers who've had other strange run-ins with the assistant.

Luckily, if Alexa does ever become "self-aware" as Terminator 2: Judgment Day prophesised, all she could probably do is turn on your least favourite Spotify playlists and repeat, "Sorry, I'm afraid I can't do that."

But, as soon as androids become a regular thing, I'm out.
