Happy International Women’s Day! See How Bad Aussie Festivals Are at Showcasing Female Artists

What better time than International Women’s Day to note the gender imbalance in Aussie festivals?

A new Instagram account has begun spilling the tea sharing mock-ups of Australian musical festival line-ups with all the male artists removed.

The result: A whole lotta empty music festivals.

The point behind the LineupsWithoutMales account (if you didn’t catch it from its ‘woman shrugging’ emoji avatar) is to demonstrate the gender imbalance in the local music scene, and how female artists struggle to get the same kind of respect and/or opportunities as their male counterparts.

Earlier this year, Melbourne band Camp Cope took a stand against sexual assault and harassment at music festivals as part of their It Takes One campaign.

Their song “The Opener” also directly addresses that gender imbalance, with the cutting, sarcastic final line: "Yeah, just get a female opener, that'll fill the quota."

Of course, LineupsWithoutMales has love for some festivals, today sharing the lineups with much better female representation.

More like those, please.
