Grammar Wins Again: Woman Spots Typo In Law, Gets Out Of Parking Ticket

It turns out having good grammar can actually save you money. Who'da thunk it?

According to the Associated Press, an Ohio woman was able to have her parking ticket thrown out by an appeals court after spotting a typo in the law.

In the village of West Jefferson, the law prohibits “any motor vehicle camper, trailer, farm implement and/or non-motorized vehicle” from parking in certain areas for more than 24 hours.

Noting the missing comma between “motor vehicle” and “camper,” Andrea Cammelleri argued her motor vehicle, a 1993 Ford pickup truck, was technically exempt. Motor vehicle camper, it ain’t.

The village argued the missing comma was merely a typo and that the meaning was otherwise easily construed.

However, the appeals court judges instructed the village to amend the law should they want it to mean something other than it currently does.
