Everything You Need to Know About the 2024 Paris Olympics

Oui-lympics 🥐
The Olympics are happening this year in the city of love 💘 aka Paris, France.
And we get to see some of the world’s greatest athletes come together to compete in hundreds of different sports.
But the question is, are people actually going to watch the 2024 Olympics?
We asked some of our members if they are likely to watch the games and 59 per cent of Gen Z said they would be tuning in.

Which Aussie athletes will we be seeing compete this year?
Aussies that we will see at the games this year include the Matildas Football team, including the likes of Mary Fowler, Hayley Raso and Ellie Carpenter.
Other athletes you might see include swimming superstars Ariarne Titmus and Emma McKeon, as well as middle-distance runner Peter Bol.
Aussies we won’t see at the games
Unfortunately, we won’t see one of Australia's biggest athletes, Sam Kerr, at the games this year due to a torn ACL.
Singer and swimmer Cody Simpson attempted to qualify but didn’t make the cut this year for the Aus swimming team. Cody says he will be returning back to the music industry as his four-year-long Olympic dream comes to an end.
Yay more Cody music for us 🎶
And in a bit of a shock, four-time gold medalist Cate Campbell also didn’t qualify for the swim team after finishing 7th in the qualifying trials.
How did Australia perform during the previous Olympic games?
In the 2020 games (postponed to 2021), Australia placed 6th overall with 46 medals (17 gold), 10th in 2016 with 29 medals and 7th in 2012 with 35 medals.
Australia is expected to have a successful result at these games with experts estimating we will win 12 gold, and 49 medals all together. So so slay.
New sports for 2024
This year we have 2 sports making their debut at the 2024 Paris Olympic games. Breaking (break dancing) and kayak cross – a combination of all canoeing’s whitewater disciplines are the two new additions we will see this year.

When is it and how can we watch it?
The opening ceremony will begin the 26th July at 4:24am AEST, with athletes parading on boats down the Seine river. The first two events, soccer and rugby will commence on the 24th July, but all other sports commence on the 27th July or later.
Channel 9 and 9GEM will have 24-hour live, free coverage of the events, and 9Now will have on-demand highlights for free viewing. Stan Sport will also be broadcasting the events in 4K and ad free.
