Emmy Nominations: “Game Of Thrones”, Beyoncé’s “Lemonade”, “Carpool Karaoke” And The Rest Of Your TV Faves Feel The Love

All – okay, most – of your favourite TV shows were nominated for Emmy awards last night (early morning L.A. time), and you can maybe thank registered voter Donald Trump.

(The infamous Emmy critic – and, oh yeah, current Presidential contender – became a voting member of the Television Academy off the back of The Apprentice. Do you reckon he’s a Kimmy Schmidt fan?)

Game of Thrones snagged the most nominations – 23 – including nods for stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Maisie Williams, Kit Harington and Max Von Sydow. (We guess the spoiler of Jon Snow coming back to life this past seasons is well and truly out of the bag.)

It’ll go up against The Americans, Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Homeland, House of Cards and Mr. Robot in the Outstanding Drama field.

The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story (this writer’s favourite program of the year) was the next most nominated show, but it won’t steal any of GOT’s thunder, as it’s competing in the Limited Series categories (where it’ll instead steal Fargo’s thunder).

Among its nominees was David Schwimmer (22 years after his first nod for Friends), presumably for his ability to endlessly say ‘Juice’ with such conviction.

Black-ish, Master of None, Modern Family, Silicon Valley Transparent, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and reigning champ Veep will contend for the Outstanding Comedy crown.

Obviously, there were snubs: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Orange is the New Black were left out in the cold, as was Julianna Margulies (for The Good Wife’s final season) and Christian Slater (a Golden Globe winner for Mr Robot’s first).

Big (on the internet) sensations like Bojack Horseman and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee were also excluded from Outstanding Animated Program and Outstanding Talk Variety Series, respectively.

In the latter category, newcomer James Corden snuck in to compete against Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, superseding David Letterman’s replacement (and previous category winner) Stephen Colbert, who was denied a nod.

In fact, so popular was Corden with Emmy voters, his Late, Late Show Carpool Karaoke primetime special is also up for Outstanding Variety Special, where he’ll compete against Adele, nommed for her Live in New York show, Amy Schumer’s Live at the Apollo and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.

Bey is also up for Outstanding Director of a Variety Special. She is closing in on that EGOT.

The Emmys can also boast of being way more diverse than their cinematic counterparts, the Oscars. As Vulture found, of the 73 actors nominated, 24.6 per cent are people of colour. 2016 also marks the first year in which actors of colour scored a nod in every leading actor category.
