Elon Musk Has Officially Bought Twitter, And He’s Already Made Some Big Changes

Is this a good or bad thing?

After a wild few months filled with controversy and drama, Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter has finally gone through.

In the final deal, the Tesla and SpaceX billionaire paid $44 billion USD for the social media service, and has come in in a big way.

Good one, Elon.

He’s also changed his personal Twitter bio to read “Chief Twit”.

Reports ahead of the purchase suggested Musk planned on thinning Twitter’s staffing by 75 per cent – he’s denied those claims but there are still some concerns among Twitter staff.

He’s hit the ground running, immediately taking to Twitter HQ and reportedly firing Twitter’s CEO, CFO and Twitter’s head of legal policy.

The Head of Legal Policy, Vijaya Gadde, was the individual who made the decision to permanently suspend Donald Trump from Twitter, which fits in with Elon’s anti-censorship, pro-free speech approach to the platform.

In a statement released on his personal Twitter account, Elon shared his motivation for buying the company.

“The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilisation to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,” he said.

He’s also shared his appreciation for how Twitter enables “citizen journalism”.

There’s been some mixed reactions to the news, with some celebrating the ‘protection of free speech’ on the platform.

Meanwhile others are preaching caution, worried about what the new purchase could mean, especially for American politics.

Aside from speculation, we don’t know yet what the future looks like for Twitter or it’s 400 million users.

But with Elon at the helm, there’s bound to be drama, controversy and big changes.
