EA Claims the Guinness World Record for Most-Downvoted Reddit Comment

It’s probably not an achievement to be proud of.

Some people devote their entire lives to making it into the Guinness Book of World Records, but evidently not every record is something to be celebrated. In the 2020 edition of the book, video game company Electronic Arts (EA) has landed the record for the most-downvoted comment on Reddit.

Cue the slow claps.

As reported by PC Gamer, the comment was in response to complaints about Star Wars Battlefront II and its super annoying loot box system. When an unknown community manager using the official EA Community Team Reddit account responded to complaints about unlocking characters, the rebellion began; a rebellion in the shape of 683,000 downvotes.

The comment, which was posted back in 2017, attempted to justify the loot box system by stating, "The intent is to provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking different heroes".

"We appreciate the candid feedback, and the passion the community has put forth around the current topics here on Reddit, our forums and across numerous social media outlets," they added.

Unsurprisingly, this did not go well with players, fuelling the intense downvoting. Now, the comment surpasses the second most downvoted comment by more than 600,000 votes.

Reddit user -amsha- noticed it had made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for 2020 a couple of days ago, posting a photo of the entry.

While players might find it had to forgive EA for those pesky loot boxes, changes have been made to the game’s progression system. Implemented in March 2018, the new system enabled everything to be unlockable through gameplay. So, at least they listened.
