Dr. Shaq Thinks the World Is Flat

Of all the professions to indulge in flat-Earth theories, you wouldn’t have picked that basketballers (key word: ball) would lead the charge.

During All Star weekend, Cleveland Cavaliers champ Kyrie Irving talked about the possibility of our planet being flat. He later claimed he was joking, admitting “it would be scientifically impossible.”

But to retired legend Shaquille O’Neal, impossible is nothing.

On his aptly-titled podcast, The Big Podcast, Shaq revealed his feelings on the subject: “The Earth is flat.”

(We’ll take this opportunity to note that Shaq has an honourary doctorate, though, not in astrophysics.)

Here’s what his argument boils down to: “I drive from coast to coast, and this s*** is flat to me. I’m just saying. I drive from Florida to California all the time, and it’s flat to me. I do not go up and down at a 360-degree angle, and all that stuff about gravity, have you looked outside Atlanta lately and seen all these buildings? You mean to tell me that China is under us? China is under us? It’s not. The world is flat.”

(No one tell the Harlem Globetrotters.)

Gizmodo has shared a handy video that debunks the flat-Earth theory. I recognise that admitting the world is round also means admitting we live in a world where Shaq is wrong. It’s a tough day for us all.
