Executed Bali Nine Ringleader Andrew Chan Reads Haunting Letter In New Doco

“The past comes and catches up with you.”

The voice of Bali Nine drug smuggler Andrew Chan is likely to be heard in more and more Australian schools following his execution, thanks to the surge in popularity of a documentary warning students against drug usage.

Maldina Rutter’s educational doco Dear Me features Chan reading aloud a letter he had written to warn young people away from lives of drug addiction and crime.

According to Ninemsn, the educational kit that accompanies the 30-minute film has been especially popular in the past two months, when media coverage of Chan and Myuran Sukumaran’s impending death by firing squad was at its peak.

In the video, Chan explains to students his life story, and how he went from an “average kid” until things eventually “spiraled out of control.”

“Take it from me, if I thought about the things I did before I did them, I wouldn’t be sitting where I am today,” he concludes.

The film was sent to Indonesian President Joko Widodo as part of a larger call for mercy, to no avail.

Chan and Sukumaran, initially arrested in 2004 for acting as ringleaders in a heroin-smuggling operation through Bali, were executed earlier this week in Indonesia.
