Finally: Apple Unveils Diverse Emojis

Apple’s next operating system release will fix one of their most heavily criticised features: their all-white family of emojis.

According to The Huffington Post, a new beta release of iOS 8.3 offers users the option to change an emoji’s skin colour. (A spokeswoman for Apple would not confirm the operating system’s release date.)

This diverse new palette is a marked improvement over the current emoji keyboard, which heretofore only had a single person of colour (and they were wearing a stereotypically-reductive turban).

Soon, everything from faces to thumbs-up can be represented in a spectrum of skin tones, though the upcoming release is not without controversy; specifically, its Simpsons-esque ‘yellow’ tone for Asian users.

Also newly added to the suddenly progressive, more inclusive Appleverse: same-sex couples. However, there are still no interracial pairings. We’ll have to wait for iOS 8.4, I guess.
