Did You See the "It’s Always Sunny" Shout-Out In "Dumbo"?

Tim Burton: Filmmaker. Rumoured boyfriend of Eva Green. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stan?

Families flocking to Disney’s latest live-action reimagining of a classic cartoon, Dumbo, are likely hoping to see some jaw-dropping CGI, Michael Keaton’s glorious wig, and a damn cute elephant.

But will they be ready for a reference to the disgustingly, hilariously offensive cult comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia?

It turns out director Tim Burton—or perhaps an Always Sunny superfan in the casting department—has left an Easter Egg within the cotton candy-coloured world of Dumbo’s circus. But no, it’s not 'kitten mittens'.

See, the new film stars Danny DeVito as Max Medici, ringleader of the circus where the big-eared flying elephant Dumbo is initially discovered. DeVito, you hopefully already know, has also spent the last decade-and-a-bit on TV, playing the gross Frank Reynolds in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Now, his presence in Dumbo isn’t so surprising; after all, DeVito's been a movie star for some time, and previously worked with Burton in Batman Returns, where he played the Penguin.

However, in Dumbo, after his circus gets snapped up by Michael Keaton’s wealthy entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere, Medici gets his very own snarky secretary. Her name is Verna, and she's played by character actress Sandy Martin, from Always Sunny too. Among her many career roles, Martin has played Mac’s mom throughout the show’s run. She’s on the left in the image below, besides Rob McElhenney’s character Mac.

Yes, that’s right, in Disney’s Dumbo, Frank and Mac’s mom are reunited for one glorious moment. Did DeVito recommend Martin for the role of Verna? Was it a cheeky wink for the more adult viewers in the audience? Or is this just a coincidence, and wishful thinking on our part that there’s some larger conspiracy at play?

Cue the relevant It’s Always Sunny GIF.
