"Cyberpunk 2077" Patches and DLC Plans Have Finally Been Announced

CD Projekt Red have apologised for the chaotic release.

After a dumpster fire of a release, CD Projekt Red have announced an apology and commitment statement to players of Cyberpunk 2077 in a lengthy five minute video.

In an announcement made on Thursday morning, CD Projekt Red explained what had happened in the later stages of Cyberpunk 2077’s development and how things went wrong.

"Dear gamers, we are committed to fixing bugs and crashes and will continue to work and improve the game via future updates to make sure you are enjoying the game regardless of the platform," they said in the statement.

"We will use this space to inform you about the progress being made on Cyberpunk 2077’s further development, including information about updates and improvements, free DLCs, and more."

The game developer also shared a roadmap for Cyberpunk 2077 updates, DLC and content for 2021 and early 2022.

Players should expect to see two patches, 1.1 and 1.2, and free DLC by mid-year and then a next-gen console update in late 2021 (we’re guessing September or October).

CD Projekt Red also left some room to answer some common questions about Cyberpunk 2077 in their announcement, but for context, here are the reasons why it failed and their plans for fixing it in the future.

The reason why there was such a gap between PC versions of the game and old gen consoles was to do with the size of Cyberpunk 2077. It features a multitude of custom objects, interacting systems and mechanics.

The game isn't stretched out over flat terrain where developers can make things less taxing hardware-wise. Instead, it's condensed in one big city and in a relatively loading-free environment.

Their aim was to make the game look amazing on PC and then to just adjust it to consoles. Ultimately, they underestimated the task.

CD Projekt Red's main problem in developing the game for consoles was having to constantly improve their in-game streaming system for old-gen consoles. Streaming is responsible for 'feeding' the engine with what you see on screen, as well as the game mechanics.

Because the game's landscape was so big and the disk bandwidth of old-gen consoles isn't as developed, CD Projekt Red was constantly challenged by the size problem of old-gen consoles.

Since the problems went public, CD Projekt Red released three hotfixes which have improved the game, but have several more patch fixes and DLCs coming.

For now CD Projekt Red's main focus is on fixing the bugs and crashes players are experiencing across every platform.

Players should expect a series of both small and large patches to be released throughout the year. The first update will drop in the next 10 days, and it will be followed by a larger, more significant update, in the weeks after.

Shortly following the release of the highly anticipated game, many players began to notice several problems with the gameplay including bugs and crashes when they tried to play Cyberpunk 2077 on last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One.

With the problems being so widespread, CD Projekt Red were forced to make an apology and quickly rush to put together a series of patches to fix all the issues.

"First of all, we would like to apologise to you for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase. We should have paid more attention to making it play better on PS4 and Xbox One," they said in the statement.

Following this, CD Projekt Red—along with several retailers that sold the game—were offering up refunds to anyone who wasn’t happy with their purchase and couldn’t wait for the series of updates that CD Projekt Red had planned for the next two years.

For those who stuck around, these announcements finally give some more clarity on how the game is going to be fixed and what players should expect to receive as compensation over the next few months.

If you’re still having problems with your copy of Cyberpunk 2077 there are a few changes you can make to the visuals of the game to make the play experience more tolerable.

But if you’re still having trouble, it looks like you’ll have to sit tight until June-ish this year.
