Could Abbott Make A Return As Liberal Leader (And PM)?

Liberal senator says we shouldn't "rule out" Tony Abbott returning to leadership and becoming Prime Minister again.

Last night on ABC's Q&A program, Senator Arthur Sinodinos answered questions about the possibility of Abbott regaining Liberal party leadership.

Host Tony Jones asked whether he could see the Liberal party going back to Abbott after the whole "booting him out for Turnbull" fiasco.

"Will we ever go back to Tony? In politics I've learnt through bitter experience you never rule anything in or out," Sinodinos said.

"But my view is that the party is moving on and the younger generation of members coming through... are looking at... how we can make the Liberal Party narrative more contemporary."

Co-panellist and historian Robert Manne said he doesn't think Abbott could gain leadership again, given what he did in his first term as Prime Minister. He does think that Abbott is actively working to undermine and destabilise Turnbull.

"I think he made such a fool of himself when he was PM. Everyone will remember Prince Philip being knighted and so on," Manne said.

Also, who could forget other equally cringe-worthy moments, such as that time he forgot how the English language worked and said, "you bet you are... you bet I am."

Abbott has reportedly told people in Britain that he reckons there's a reasonable chance of him regaining Prime Ministership.

After the report was released Abbott wrote a scathing Tweet aimed at the journalist who broke the story, calling it "unsourced, unattributed [and] unprofessional".

Journalist Latika Bourke replied saying: "I absolutely stand by my story and sources."
