Cardi B Is Trademarking "Okurrr", Okurrr?

"It's 2019, b****, there's a lot of ways to get rich."
She likes dollars, she likes diamonds, she likes stunting, she likes… complicated trademark law?
According to Rolling Stone, Cardi B has reportedly filed an application to trademark her soothing catchphrase, "Okurrr", which would give her the exclusive right to use the word/noise on merchandise. A separate filing covers its use on clothing, such as "T-shirts, sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts, pants, shorts, jackets, footwear, headgear, namely hats and caps, blouses, bodysuits, dresses, jumpsuits, leggings, shirts, sweaters and undergarments."
And in case you were planning on using the common misspelling "Okurr" (with just two Rs) on your own off-brand Cardi B-inspired undergarments, she’s copyrighting that version of "Okurr" as well.
If you have no idea what we’re even vaguely referring to, congratulations on having been unchiselled from the ice sculpture into which you were accidentally frozen circa 2015. See, Cardi B is a well-liked recording artist who has popularised her Dominican-by-way-of-the-Bronx exaltations, and is now making bank off them.
The most famous of these is "Okurrr", which is a trill she described to Jimmy Fallon as akin to the noise "a cold pigeon in New York City" might make. But it’s meaning is still basically "Okay".
Here she is creating an army for her coming "Okurrr" invasion.
Anyway, "Okurrr" is fun to say, and even if it ends up coming with a cost, it’s worth it. However, she may face trouble getting the trademark approved, given its long pre-Cardi history in pop culture.
As Paper reports, some fans nonetheless felt compelled to complain to her directly on social media, to which she responded, as she is wont to do, amazingly: "Every single time I go to a corporate meeting, every time I go to a TV show, every time I do a commercial... you think I’m not gonna profit off this s***?"
"While I'm still here I'm gonna secure all the f***ing bags."
Let us leave you with some of Cardi’s wise words: "Let me give y'all a secret too. It's 2019, b****, there's a lot of ways to get rich."
