Can You Solve The Maths Problem That Brought Scotland To Tears?

Dry your eyes, mate.
Students out there embarking on exams, be relieved you probably won’t face a question as difficult – nor as tear-jerking – as the one that terrorised the Scots back in May.
According to the BBC, the Scottish Qualifications Authority had to lower the pass mark for Scotland's Higher Maths examination when sixth-form students (16 to 18 year-olds) were unable to figure out a particular problem involving a zebra and a crocodile.
That new pass mark? 34 per cent. To give an indication of how low that score is, consider that the Entourage movie has 32 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. We are talking Entourage levels, people.
When Scottish students were faced with the exam back in May, there were reports of pupils being reduced to tears as a result of its difficulty.

More than 14,000 people went on to sign petitions protesting the exam.
So... this is the part of the article where we ask, "Want to see if you can figure the problem out yourself?"

Come back tomorrow for the solution (yes, there really is one). And don't forget to show your working in the comments section below.
