A Boy Gets To Play With Barbie In The First Ad Of Its Kind, Ever

This is so fierce.

For the first time ever, Mattel has featured a little boy playing with a Barbie in one of their advertisements for the iconic doll.

The clip dropped on October 30 and shows Barbie and pal in matching Moschino outfits (though you may not be able to pick up on that from the ad, which is pretty subtle with its product placement).

According to Forbes, the limited edition Moschino Barbie has already sold out, despite hitting the market at $150 per doll.

Moschino’s creative director Jeremy Scott described Barbie as a muse, saying, “Like every girl and gay boy, I loved Barbie.”

This is just the latest ad from Mattel to bust gender stereotypes, following one that asked young girls to “imagine the possibilities” - career-wise - Barbie has provided. (It inspired us to ask our members: Is Barbie a good role model?)

Though their new approach is admirable, it might also be essential from a financial viewpoint. Barbie sales have slumped for the past four consecutive years; sales were down 16 per cent in 2014 and 2015 doesn’t look as if it will buck that trend. In 2016, competitor Hasbro takes over Mattel’s Disney Princesses line too.

Opening up to a new market of young boys isn’t simply about being gender nonconformist; it’s about being business-savvy.

Still, that doesn't diminish this freshly-blazed trail. Fierce, indeed.
