Book Club Review: Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend

Book Club Review: Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend

Bookworms, assemble! Here is last month’s winning review from the Student Edge Book Club title, Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend, written by member Rezvan Cyrus.

Hot Pterodactyl Boyfriend is a peculiar novel, which is exactly why I loved it.

I'm a huge fan of insane stories. With this book, I just let all my expectations go because I enjoy being surprised.

I appreciate a story that is unique and imaginative. I liked author Alan Cumyn's sense of humour. Despite this not being a laugh-out-loud book, the essence alone is comical.

It's a story you’ll either understand or don't, and if you get it you will think it's genius and love it so much that you will want to re-read it immediately.

(Ed. Here’s the official synopsis: “Shiels is very pleased with her perfectly controlled life (controlling others while she’s at it). She’s smart, powerful, the Student Body Chair, and she even has a loving boyfriend. What more could a girl ask for? But everything changes when the first-ever interspecies transfer student, a pterodactyl named Pyke, enrolls at her school. There’s something about him—something primal—that causes the students to lose control whenever he’s around. Even Shiels, the seemingly perfect self-confident girl that she is, can’t keep her mind off of him, despite her doting boyfriend and despite the fact that Pyke immediately starts dating Jocelyn, the school’s fastest runner who Shiels has always discounted as a nobody.”)

I enjoyed how Alan Cumyn's mind works. Pterodactyls are prehistoric and at some stage they actually existed. Hence, by putting one in the modern era brings infinite possibilities and I believe Cumyn has done an excellent job at exploring them and transforming them into an original story.

Overall, his writing style is both easy to read and literary at the same time.

It was an amazing experience to be entertained by a story that's both extraordinary and incredible.
