Before being renamed the 'bin chicken', the ibis was once a majestic and revered bird in Ancient Egypt. An actual god.

The ibis' fall from grace has long been documented, as it flocked in droves to Australia's Eastern cities in search of bin scraps, turning their white feathers into shades of grey and green bin juice.

But despite being relegated to the same category as rats and cockroaches, the bin chicken is facing a renaissance in popular opinion. It's also being immortalised on the ankles and arms of young Schoolies.

Crossfire Tattoos and Piercing's Luke Braniff has told Yahoo7 that during the Queensland Schoolies, the parlour tattooed at least ten school-leavers out there with bin chicken tattoos.

"They love it, they think its great," Braniff said. "The schoolies have some fun before they become serious adults and the tattoos are normally something funny they’ll remember the week by."

The tattoos are selected randomly from a gumball-style machine and can include traditional, schoolies and 'bin chickens'.

The bin chicken designs come in a variety of styles, like "bin chicken eating pizza" and "bin chicken smoking a cigarette"; both things that a real-life bin chicken would definitely do.

In other trash chook news, the ibis is currently ahead in the polls for the Guardian's "Bird of the Year", so 2017 is looking to be the rubbish bird's year.

Let's just hope the bin chook's reign continues for the sake of those tatted-up ankles.
