Beekeepers, Pirates and Muggles Make Up the 8 Best University Clubs in Australia

Get involved, me hearties.
University is one of the most exciting times of your life, and the connections and friendships you make can be lifelong. One way to make new friends and meet like-minded students who share similar interests is to join a club or society. From cultural and academic clubs to sport and recreational activities, you’re bound to find something of interest to you. If not, you could always just start your own club.
If you’re interested in joining a club or society but aren’t sure which one, check out your university’s website and have a look at what’s on offer or attend an open day where you can meet representatives from a wide range of groups.
In the meantime, with more than 40 universities across Australia, Student Edge scanned more than 4,000 clubs and societies to compile a list of some of the more unique ones on offer. You’re welcome!
Metalheads (University of Wollongong)
This society was created to band together fans of heavy metal music. United by vigorous vocals and dense instruments, the Metalheads meet weekly to hang, enjoy music and spread the word of upcoming gigs and new bands.
Murdoch Kanye Club (Murdoch University, Perth)

You either love him or hate him, but there is no denying the adoration a group of West Aussies have for Kanye West. Each week this group of Kanye fans meet to enjoy his music as well as that of associated artists. They also have a Kanye West-themed party once a year to celebrate the iconic rapper. Kanye would love that!
Pirates (University of Melbourne)

Pirates is a social club dedicated to all things musical and pirate-related. The group has several aims including having International Talk Like a Pirate Day enshrined as a public holiday and to have the book Treasure Island moved to the nonfiction section of the library.
Cheap Cocktail Creations (University of South Australia)
Every student knows just how hard it is to make ends meet while studying. Cheap Cocktail Creations is dedicated to helping destitute students feel fancy and get the drink they deserve. Lovers of drinks with tiny umbrellas meet to share recipes and learn to make a delicious array of alcoholic beverages. With a tagline like "cocktails for broke, stressed and sarcastic students who are a little extra", there could be a waitlist to join this club.
Monash Muggles (Monash University)
Although the book and movie series ended years ago, the magical world of Harry Potter still has an enormous impact on the literary world. Seemingly every university has some form of a club or interest group devoted to the boy wizard and his friends. These groups keep the magic alive with quiz nights, movie screenings and house sorting events. There are also groups and leagues entirely devoted to playing quidditch.
F.R.I.E.N.D.S Club (Victoria University)
Every month, fans of the much-loved American sitcom meet to relish in Joey’s love for food, Chandler’s sarcasm, Monica’s bossiness, Rachels antics, Phoebe’s awkwardness and Ross’ admiration for dinosaurs. No matter what, it sounds like this group of fans will be there for you.
Animal Appreciation Groups
From dogs to pigs, there is an appreciation group for every creature great and small across most campuses. So, no matter your favourite animal, you’ll find a club with people who love the same critter as you. The University of Adelaide has a Pig Club dedicated to all things porcine, Murdoch University has a Feline Interest Group for cat lovers to rejoice, and there is even a beekeeping club located at the University of Tasmania.
Cosmic Hitchhiker Appreciation Society (University of Melbourne)
The Cosmic Hitchhiker Appreciation Society (CHAS) was formed back in 1982, and initially assembled to increase the general knowledge of and to enjoy the works of Douglas Adams, the renowned author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The club has since grown to also include science-fiction comedy such as Red Dwarf, Dr. Who and a large selection of British comedies, comedians and writers.
