Oodles of Oodles! Do You Own Australia’s Most Popular Dog?

Oodles of Oodles! Do You Own Australia’s Most Popular Dog?

Did yours make the list? 🐕

Everyone loves a dog, but it looks like Australians love one kind of dog more than any other.

The latest Pet Pulse Report is out, and the Cavoodle has been named as Australia’s favourite dog for the sixth straight year, and it’s not alone.

Poodle crosses (Oodles) have dominated the top 100 dogs, making them well and truly Top Dog.

The report, published by Greencross Vets, analysed over 750,000 puppy births and millions of purchases at pet stores to look at what dogs we love and why.

Some quick facts:

  • Eight oodles are in the top 100 dogs: Cavoodle (1), Labradoodle (9), Groodle (13), Spoodle (24), Moodle (25), Poodle X (29), Toy Poodle X (64) and Schnoodle (81).
  • Cavoodles are the most popular everywhere, with ACT loving them the most.
  • Nearly 20 per cent of all new puppies born at Greencross vets were oodles.

There’s a lot of reasons Australians love oodles, including their behaviour and size, but Dr Michael Yazbeck, Veterinarian at Greencross Vets, said illnesses like hayfever and asthma have a lot to do with it.

“The legend of the hypoallergenic dog has had a huge impact on the rise in the Oodle’s popularity,” he said.

Since Oodles typically shed less, they’re better for people with allergies. There’s even been a correlation in the rise of issues like asthma and hayfever, and a rise in people going for oodle puppies.

What’s more, we’re also downsizing. A rise in apartment living over large houses means Australians are going for smaller, cleaner dogs like Oodles.

“Small to medium sized dogs like the Cavoodle are well suited to apartment or townhouse living and their intelligence makes them highly trainable – a big plus for those living in close proximity to both humans and other dogs,” says Dr Yazbeck

Let’s take a look at some of the top dogs.

King Cavoodle.

The Cavoodle only entered Australia’s top 20 in 2009, but since then, it’s had a huge rise in popularity.

Quickly climbing through the ranks, it reached number one in 2016, overtaking the Maltese Cross, and staying on top ever since.

Oodles.

Oodles are also one of the most spoilt dogs on the market, and it’s Labradoodles who seem to get the most.

Labradoodle owners spend a whopping 153% more than the average dog owner, with owners more likely to buy “premium foods, grooming products and accessories”.

On average, Oodle owners spend 27% more on grooming products, making them the best-dressed on the market.

Did your dog make the list? If not, that’s ruff.
