Australia Makes Olympic History With First Ever Gold For Women's Rugby Sevens

Australia has won the first ever gold medal for women’s rugby. (Really, would any other result make sense?)

The Aussie women’s rugby sevens team triumphed over New Zealand in Rio this morning, 24-17.

It was a runaway victory, with Australia earning a 24-5 lead with just four minutes remaining.

Two late tries by the Kiwis were unable to make up the difference.

Not only does the team earn a place in the history books for becoming the first ever female gold medalists in the sport, they become the first team to score a rugby gold medal in 92 years. (Rugby hasn't been seen in a summer Olympics since 1924, and then, it was rugby union.)

Jarryd Hayne - who, given his habit of code-jumping, could end up playing for the women's sevens in the near future - had some feelings:

After the match, the New Zealand team fought through tears to deliver a powerful Haka for the audience.

It makes you think: Why the hell did the IOC wait this long to include women’s rugby?

Meanwhile, Canada outdid Britain in the third-place playoff, making do with the bronze.

For those keeping score, Australia now has four gold medals and sits in third place, behind China and the United States, on the Rio 2016 tally.
