Is There Any Limit To Free Speech?

One Student Edge member reflects on the viability of free speech in this post-Charlie Hebdo age.

Freedom of speech is an unequivocal human right, one that many of us take for granted.

But, while we like to think that the entire world enjoys this basic human right, we cannot ignore the fact that in some parts of the world free speech is a luxury that cannot be afforded.

Countries such as Burma and Libya exemplify the issue of widespread censorship, divesting citizens of the most basic right to free speech. But, in light of the recent events at Charlie Hebdo - in which the staff of the satirical French magazine came under attack by gunman, leaving 11 dead - questions have been raised about what limits free speech should have. While many are pleading for displays of solidarity, some see this as a warning of the danger of free speech. We cannot ignore that there is some truth in that.

Because, although the law may place restrictions on certain areas to protect the rights of others, the lines between free speech and unlawful perversion are becoming increasingly blurred. So, perhaps we need give some thought into this issue. Because while we need to protect our rights as humans, we also need to think about all those people who don't have the freedom to speak their mind like we do.

What we need to do is use this ability that we take for granted to do the right thing. Because character is how you treat others who can do nothing for you.
