Get on board this scholar-ship.

This article is presented in partnership with ANU.

Heading into your last year of high school, it can be hard to know what to do next, and how to get there.

If you’re heading into Year 11 or 12 in 2023, you’ll probably be thinking about life beyond school – especially about uni and where to go.

A big thing on a lot of people’s minds as they head into Year 11 and 12 are scholarships – they’re a surefire way to guarantee your place at a uni, along with a host of other benefits like financial support, personal development and much more.

Getting a scholarship application in early is the best way to get a front foot on everything after high school, and will stand out on your CV for years.

The Tuckwell Scholarship at the Australian National University (ANU) is a major scholarship on offer to Australian students, and is one of the best ones you can apply for.

Every year, 25 students from across the country are chosen for the Tuckwell Scholarship and are given the opportunity of a lifetime at a university ranked in the top 30 worldwide.

Who’s eligible for the scholarship?

Good news – heaps of Australian school leavers are eligible for the Tuckwell scholarship provided they have a predicted ATAR of at least 95, or 90 in certain cases.

If you're a regional, rural or urban student, go to a public or private school, you are welcome to apply.

Applicants are assessed on their academic results and potential, plus any other significant achievements.

Applicants are also evaluated on a broad range of attributes, like thinking skills, sense of humour, selflessness, humility, resilience, emotional intelligence and much more.

Reckon you fit the mould? Check out the full list of Tuckwell Attributes.

There’s no limitation on what you can study with a Tuckwell scholarship either; current Tuckwell students study things as broad as engineering, arts, economics, science and philosophy.

You can check out the profiles of previous Tuckwell scholars here.

What do Tuckwell scholarship recipients receive?

In a word, the Tuckwell scholarship is comprehensive.

Successful students receive $24,700 a year for their entire undergraduate degree, which covers on-campus costs, books and living expenses.

But it doesn’t stop at financial support.

Tuckwell scholars also receive guaranteed access to ANU student accommodation, assistance moving to Canberra plus two return journeys to your hometown every year for the length of your degree.

You’ll also receive some great perks like transport for your parents or family to join you on Commencement week plus a free ANU gym membership.

Students also get access to a host of leadership opportunities, mentoring, support and a scholar’s only common room at ANU.

How and when can I apply?

Ready to go? Great.

Applications for 2024 open on March 1 2023 and are open until April 12.

The first stage of the application will involve submitting your personal details, education history and some information about your life and circumstances.

Successful candidates will move onto the second stage, where they’ll answer longer questions about themselves and their achievements. During this time, applicants’ principals will also be contacted for a reference on the student.

The final stage is an in-person interview at ANU, where you’ll be asked about your attributes and your commitment to Australia, before the final 25 Tuckwell Scholars are chosen.

ANU can help guide you through the application process – check out the 2024 Tuckwell Scholarship Application Guide to see how.
