Allergies Be Damned, Science Has Figured Out A Way For Everyone To Eat 'Peanut Butter' (Kinda)

Have your EpiPens at the ready: ‘peanut butter’ may soon be returned to canteens (just not quite as you remember it).

According to ABC News, Aussie researchers have found a way to create a spread that’s almost identical to ‘peanut butter’ in taste, but made out of mung beans.

Though ‘mung bean butter’ may not sound quite as tantalising, it’ll have those with anaphylaxis salivating, allowing them to finally see what all the fuss is about.

Those who aren’t allergic to peanuts can also celebrate, as this new, risk-free ‘peanut butter’ could be allowed back onto the menus of schools, hospitals and airlines (many of which have banned the product, for fear of harming those with fatal allergies).

Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre general manager Ken Quail told the ABC that his “mung bean paste” (again, we’ve got to get a better name for this) “eliminates risk in a whole of ways”.

"Airlines can serve it to anybody, it takes out that enormous risk they face in serving any products with peanuts.”

The centre has taken out a patent and sold the rights to an unnamed company behind other commercially available spreads.

However, there remain concerns from the allergen-conscious community about replacements and substitutes, as well as bans in general. As mother Natasha Couzens told the ABC, “you can get complacent”.

Stay ever vigilant, enemies of the peanut. More news on #Mungbeangate as it develops.

  • My friend has a severe peanut allergy, and for ages I've had "Peanut" Butter (made from sunflower seeds) that looks and tastes the same around her and NO REACTION!!! She's even eaten it herself, and been completely fine (apart from the smell making her freak out - it's that accurate)!!!
