All the Reasons You Should Have a Mentor and Why It’s Never Too Early to Find One

Because what’s better than learning from those already in the know?

How many times have you heard someone say “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”?

It feels like these days, a degree or certificate isn’t enough to guarantee you a foot in the door.

It might seem a little unfair, but you need an extra edge… or maybe someone on the inside who can help get you on the right track.

Next stop: your dream career!

Friends, it’s time to network and find yourself a mentor.

Net-what-now? If you aren’t already all over this, you can check out our previous articles on networking and mentors here, but believe us when we say they’re really important and beneficial to have!

That’s why we spoke to Nirajit Syamal about how to network like a pro.

Nirajit is the founder of CareerView, which provides students with the opportunity to connect with young professionals through their free online resources.

Yes, you read that right, it does say free! You can check out those resources here, and read on for Nirajit’s tips and tricks to get started.

When should I start looking for a mentor?

It’s never too early! In fact, starting in school could be the best thing you ever do.

Nirajit says the sooner you begin, the easier it will be to find the right mentor for you.

“Networking is an art, it takes time to develop and it will never be perfect,” he said.

“By starting early, you give yourself many opportunities to practice and improve your networking skills, allowing you to establish meaningful connections that can benefit you in the future.”

What’s the point?

Feeling accomplished, improving your skills and leadership abilities, having better engagement… need we go on?

There's so many benefits, but we get that starting a convo with a stranger can sound all kinds of scary and that’s totally okay.

“Feeling scared or lacking confidence is normal,” Nirajit said, “but taking the initiative to seek mentorship is a courageous step towards personal and professional growth.”

“Remember that mentors are willing to help, and they have likely been in your shoes before and understand the challenges you may face.”

Okay I need a mentor, but I don’t know anyone? Where do I find them?

Nirajit says it’s important not to underestimate the power of seeking guidance from those closest to you.

“Take a look at your inner circle of close friends, family members, and school teachers. See if there is someone among them who can offer you relatable and unbiased advice to support your needs,” he said.

“If you're struggling to find a mentor close to home or feel hesitant about networking at public events, CareerView is an easy and free online portal that allows you to start building your network.”
