Adelaide & Geelong Match Cancelled Following Murder Of AFL Coach Phil Walsh

Adelaide’s AFL match against Geelong has been cancelled following the stabbing death of Crows coach Phil Walsh.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan confirmed the round 14 game, set to take place at Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon, would not go ahead.

Instead, the teams will be awarded two points each.

All other round 14 games will proceed.

"This is a decision of the competition as a mark of respect to Phil Walsh," McLachlan told media this afternoon.

Walsh, 55, was stabbed to death early on Friday morning at his Somerton Park home.

His 26-year-old son, Cy Walsh, has been charged by police with murder.

Tributes have flooded in for the Adelaide head coach from all over the country; a testament to the respect he garnered while working across numerous teams over the years.

Walsh played 122 games for Collingwood, Richmond and the Brisbane Bears collectively, before taking on coaching roles at Geelong, Port Adelaide and the West Coast Eagles.

He was awarded the Crows' head coach role in the 2014 off-season.

Chairman of the Adelaide Football Club Rob Chapman released a message to supporters thanking them for their thoughts and well-wishes.

“Our single focus today has been the welfare of the Walsh family, our players, coaches and staff," he said.

“Through these difficult days, the Adelaide Football Club family will stick together and support each other unconditionally.”
