5 Easy Ways to Support Earth Day in 2023

You don't even need to leave the house 👀
You might be familiar with Earth Hour – WWF Australia’s yearly initiative for the country to switch off for an hour to raise awareness of our reliance on electricity and its affect on the environment.
But babes, that was last month.

Earth Day is this Saturday (mark your calendars), run by EARTHDAY.ORG who seek to “diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide”.
This year’s theme is ‘Invest In Our Planet’, which is encourages individuals, businesses, governments and institutions to recognise our collective responsibility for the planet, and to help “accelerate the transition to an equitable, prosperous green economy for all”.
Here’s five easy ways you can get involved with Earth Day 2023 - from the comfort of your own home to getting hands-on with the community.
1. Use the power of the internet.
The power to make a difference is right at your fingertips!
Make your voice heard online and get involved with Earth Day’s call to action with their many suggested hashtags and messages you can use across your social media platforms.
Some of our faves are:

Earth Day has a great social media toolkit if you’re looking for more post inspiration!
You can also take a listen to some of Spotify Australia's fave environmentally-friendly podcasts like 'How to Save Our Planet' by Lottie Dalziel and 'Wardrobe Crisis with Claire Press' (more on fashion later).
2. Join a clean-up.
If you do want to get outside, get your hands dirty and join your community in a clean-up event.
Earth Day runs 'The Great Global Cleanup' – check out this world map to see all the events that have been registered to help create a waste-free world.
You can register and host your own event too.

3. Think about your next fit.
Have you ever thought about the impact that the fashion industry has on the world?
Earth Day states on their website that “apparel companies conservatively produce 100 billion garments per year; less than 1% of clothing is recycled; 40 million tons of textiles (87% of clothing) are disposed of in landfills or incinerated”.
We know there’s been some shady stuff happening in the fast fashion industry, so here’s a few ways you can make a difference before a wardrobe upgrade:
- Educate yourself about sustainable clothing.
- Buy less and shop for quality over quantity.
- Buy second-hand clothing.
- Research brands to identify those that are ethical and practice transparency and sustainability.

4. Choosing environmentally friendly meal-options.
Our food system accounts for more than a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions, making animal agriculture one of the largest contributors to climate change, according to Earth Day.
We’re not saying to completely revamp what you eat, but maybe opt for a plant-based option every so often – it all counts!
It’s a good excuse to treat yourself to a plant-based ‘Impossible Burger’ from Grill’d on their Meat-Free Mondays (just saying). ICYMI - there's a student deal you can use for Grill'd too.

5. Plant a tree (without getting dirty).
This is probably the most typical idea that comes to mind when you think about how to help the planet, but it’s still important nonetheless!
Earth Day runs a campaign called The Canopy Project – donations to the project will help responsible reforestation to reduce CO2 to tackle the climate crisis.
If you’re eager to get hands-on, even consider planting a few flowers to create a garden to help the earth’s pollinators get to work.

There are so many more ways we can help the world this Earth Day, and these are only just a few!
